In 1949, thirteen existing members of the Daughters of the American Revolution came together to start a new DAR chapter. They came from different areas of the country and from different backgrounds. They also had various skills and interests. Their common bond was a desire to form a DAR chapter in the government-town of Richland, Washington. "The Columbia River Wellspring" is a collection of short biographies of these women. Curtis Abbott, an educated young man from East Bethel, Vermont signed up early in the Civil War to be a sharpshooter. He witnessed and lived through some of the most important battles of the Civil War. In hundreds of letters sent home to Vermont from 1861 to 1865, Abbott details camp life, battles, and marches through the Mid- Atlantic towns where he was stationed.
